I recently came across the site RCRDLBL, add some vowels and you’ve got Record Label, which is the idea behind the site. It is a chance for musicians to have their music heard and maybe make some money. As they say “RCRD LBL is an online record label releasing exclusive and completely free music from emerging and established artists.” Oh, right, and it’s all free. Personally I am downloading some Bad Brains right now. They hand select the artists whose music they are pushing
A similar site, US Trendy is doing similar stuff, but also includes a place for Fashion and Art work to be displayed, kind of an artistic collective to show off your work and maybe get discovered. Instead of the music being chosen and artists being selected to have their work exhibited, US Trendy allows folks to upload their own stuff.
Finally on the music front we have Mp3gle. Don’t ask me if it is a legal, I have my doubts. It kind of looks like it is a file sharing search engine. I am not sure the sources it is searching, but it is allowing folks to search for music and then either play it or download it. And this isn’t music by folks you have never heard of, this is brand name, big label music, the type of stuff you pay to download on iTunes. Pretty nifty if you ask me

While it might seem like I all of a sudden have found a ton to say after quite a bit of silence, what really is going on is that when I come across a link I want to write about I keep it open until I have some free time (or bookmark them until I have a chance to get back to it or it is no longer timely). I am just going through my various windows right now and finding those things I have been meaning to write about.
Fortunately some of them fall into similar categories and can be linked together n a post just like this one.
There is a movie out now called “Be Kind Rewind” the premise is, essentially, that Jack Black and Mos Def remake a bunch of classic movies. The process is apparently referred to as Sweding
(I have yet to see the movie so I am basing this on the preview, hearsay from friends and this article). To coincide with the release of the movie last month Esquire made up a list of The Five Most Awesomely Sweded Movies.
New York Magazine did a little leg work of their own to come up with their annual Best of New York list which has everything from “Fitness Classes for Kids” to the best steak. You can even check out the list broken down by neighborhood or as a straight A-Z list.
Last up for our list of lists we have another Esquire piece: The Best Sandwiches In America. At first I wasn’t too sure about this list, I mean it is one thing to find good sandwiches across the country, I am sure there are some great ones, but a Reuben from outside New York City? And a non-traditional one at that. Come on… Read more »

Another in the “Big Picture”-esque series of web sites is this one:

Check out the gun ads and last week’s infographic on why women should not wear heels.
Today’s post has to do with femininzing the notion of toughness, a la pink shirts in camouflage patterns:

It’s way too much fun.

I have found that when a topic interests me I have the tendency to talk with multiple people about it in various circles of friends. Sure, it drives my wife crazy since she feels like I am always repeating myself, but for the most part the people hearing what I am talking about are hearing it for the first time. Then what happens is a few days later I will find a website or article that references or plays off the idea that I had been talking about in these various circles. I had the option of sending out a mass email to a bunch of people who don’t really know each other or each others views on the issue/conversation/idea OR I could send out multiple emails to various groups of people.
Now I forego any direct contact with my friends and instead just blog about it.
Anyway, with various circles of friends this past week I was discussing social networking sites, more specifically that there are way too many of them and that there should be a meta-social network that allows you to have all of your social network pages managed from a single site. Basically you would be able to get your friends feeds an updates from all of the social networks you were a part of in one place. Ideally the uber-social network would be able to populate your social network pages as well, but as some folks pointed out to me, that would have a ‘bot’ controlling your page and most sites shut those pages down.
Anyway, to track the doings and happening of all your online friends there is now Spokeo. Read more »

WeFeelFine is a project I learned about at the Beautiful/Decay: Vis/Ed event last week.
To learn more about Jonathan Harris, the mind behind WeFeelFine you can watch a video of him talking about this project and his new project, Universe on CoolHunting. Anyway…
WeFeelFine is a project that… Well, actually, they have a really good description of what they are doing, so let’s let them say it in their own words:
Since August 2005, We Feel Fine has been harvesting human feelings from a large number of weblogs. Every few minutes, the system searches the world’s newly posted blog entries for occurrences of the phrases “I feel” and “I am feeling”. When it finds such a phrase, it records the full sentence, up to the period, and identifies the “feeling” expressed in that sentence (e.g. sad, happy, depressed, etc.). Because blogs are structured in largely standard ways, the age, gender, and geographical location of the author can often be extracted and saved along with the sentence, as can the local weather conditions at the time the sentence was written. All of this information is saved.
