Our Nomination for the idiot of the week: Rev. Pat Robertson

Posted by Joel Friedlander | 1 Comment

This is a partial transcript of comments made by Rev. Pat Robertson after learning of the tragic earthquakes in Haiti:

“[S]omething happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon the third, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you will get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it’s a deal.

And they kicked the French out. You know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other. Desperately poor. That island of Hispaniola is one island. It is cut down the middle on the one side is Haiti the other is the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. They need to have and we meed to pray for them a great turning to god and out of this tragedy I’m optimistic something good may come.

My Emphasis.

These comments were made on todays segment of The 700 Club.  So far no apology has been forthcoming!

I personally cannot believe that any major figure said this.  It was one thing when Robertson blamed the 911 attacks on immorality in America.  However tenuous, some people believe that people are punished for evil acts, but here this Reverend KNOWS that the people of Haiti made a pact with the Devil.  Now how can a Reverend who represents a major religion believe in collective guilt, and if he doesn’t, how can he even suggest that todays Haitians, who are centuries removed from the people who fought the French are being punished for anything that their ancestors did.

Where is this guy coming from?

Why not look at the Devil himself and see if he would do such a thing! In FAUST, PART I (1808) by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the Devil, going under the name of Mephistopheles says:

“Men’s wretchedness in soothe I so deplore,

Not even I would plague the sorry creatures more.”

I’ll go with the Devil here.  The problem with Haiti is that it is in a very bad geographic location; plagued by hurricanes each year, and every two hundred years of so Earthquakes.  Why would Satan plague the Haitians?  They already have such Tsuris!
