Responding to the Terror Threat!

Posted by Joel Friedlander | 2 Comments

We must respond actively to those countries which support terrorism.  I suggest the following steps to reduce our economic reliance upon countries which threaten our very existence.

1.    Eliminate all commercial relations and/or trade of any kind with the following countries: Cuba, Iran, Sudan, Syria,  Afghanistan, Algeria, Lebanon, Libya, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Yemen.  That means that they sell nothing in the United States and the United States doesn’t purchase anything of any kind that is even partly made in those countries.  The economic loss might just convince the rulers of those countries that they must eliminate Al Queda.

2.    Since we will not have as much oil at our disposal once we have nothing to do with several of those countries, especially Iraq and Saudi Arabia, we will have to institute fuel rationing and price controls.  This will serve two purposes; first it will give the American People an opportunity to contribute directly to the War on Terrorists and state sponsored terrorism.  It will also make American’s aware of the real risks that Al Queda still poses here.

3.    Eliminate educational relations with all of those countries.  That will mean that no one from any of those countries can come to the United States to be educated or to teach at our universities or our medical schools or our law schools or our military schools.  It means that if you come from one of those countries you can only come here on a visitors visa, no other kind.

4.    Now that we are talking about visas, we need a new kind, the type that automatically registers the visitor in a computer bank.  It also means that the computer bank must automatically register anyone overstaying that visa for any unexplained or governmentally accepted reason as an enemy alien.  Anyone overstaying that visa would have their photograph placed in every newspaper in the United States so that they could be turned in to the police, not the immigration authorities, the police.  The police can turn them over to immigration.  That will eliminate at least one source of illegal aliens in this country.  Also, if you overstay a visitors visa you have absolutely no excuse for it.  If the people in your country have suddenly started eating your kind of person, well, either go somewhere else or slather yourself with barbeque sauce and go home.

5.    Finally, for this posting, I think we must give serious consideration to issuing identity cards for all citizens.  Based upon cell phones and GPS, the government already knows everywhere we go.  It may offend some but it will get rid of much of the illegal immigrant problem and some of our terror concerns.

I would appreciate it if some of you would let me know what you think.

Some of these suggestions seem a little harsh, and others seem obvious. It makes sense to take simple steps toward securing the country, such as perfecting a computer registration system, before increasing the troop headcount in Afghanistan.

I’m not a fan of identity cards– too easy to fake, and too much power for the government.

Harsh yes, but not violent. I think that the only way we are going to get the moderate Muslim countries to put the kabosh on the radicals is to hurt them in their pocketbooks. None of those countries represent large commercial investments for the United States, other than the ones that produce OIL. If we don’t buy the oil, and other industrial countries follow our lead (we certainly can’t expect the Chinese to do so), such as the French the British and the Germans, etc., we can exert severe economic pressure on the countries that are harboring the terrorists. What else can we do, invade them and start killing people again?

As to identity cards, I don’t think that they are that easy to fake, especially if the penalty is 5 or 10 years in prison with no chance for parole. As to keeping their students out of this country, they are precisely the age group that is causing the most trouble in the world. If only the United States closes itself to them than it won’t work, but if the other educational centers close them out as well there may be some real effort on the part of the moderate Arab states to close Al Queda down.

Yes, the ideas are simplistic, but quite frankly, none of the sophisticated ideas being put forth by the administration will work. We need simple harsh steps to combat simple harsh terrorists. The alternative is that they will get atomic devices into this country and set one off in a large city; you know, NEW YORK!
