Keeping the Queers in their place in New York!

Yesterday, the New York State Senate voted against giving gays and lesbians the right to marry. One of the fools, a certain Senator named Diaz, said that it was essential that the members of the Senate carry their Bible around with them.
Should Equal Protection issues be decided by a reading of either the Old Testament, the New Testament, or the Koran?

It’s a disheartening defeat for civil rights. But civil rights have never come easily or suddenly to any group of people. Civil marriage rights will eventually be a given in every state.
I do believe the legislature is where this issue should be fought. Unlike the ridiculous laws of Switzerland that put virtually everything up to a popular referendum which is how the oldest democracy in the world just recently passed a referendum to make the building of minaret towers illegal.
If gay marriage were up for a popular vote every time it would never pass. As it stands, it’s law in a handful of states. More to come, I assure you.

If Civil Rights had been subject to a referendum, African Americans would still be second class citizens. Often it takes a judicial decision to force people to act properly. Hate is just so potent that it can almost always trump virtue.
