Jeff “Big Brother” bezos and Amazon’s remote control

In June, fans of Ayn Rand suffered the same fate—Amazon removed Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead, and The Virtue of Selfishness, with an explanation that it had “recently discovered a problem” with the titles. And some customers have complained of the same experience with Harry Potter books. Amazon says the Kindle versions of all these books were illegal. Someone uploaded bootlegged copies using the Kindle Store’s self-publishing system, and Amazon was only trying to look after publishers’ intellectual property. The Orwell incident was too rich with irony to escape criticism, however. Amazon was forced to promise that it will no longer delete its customers’ books.
(Tip of the hat to Dave Levy.)

The day that we tethered ourselves to multinational organizations (Google, Amazon, etc.) was the day that we surrendered our sovereignty over our possessions. If you are going to pay for everything with plastic you are constantly at risk of the bank putting a stop on your account. I was recently with a fellow and his wife when they couldn’t find a store that would allow them to use their debit or credit cards. They were unable to purchase necessities because of the freeze.
The only way we will restore our independence is when we begin to carry cash around with us. That of course subjects us to holdups, but we will only spend what we have at any given time. It is often jokingly said that a particular person keeps their money at home in their mattress, but at times that seems to be a very prudent way to care for your money.
The government can tail you anywhere you go if you have a global positioning system, use a cell phone, or use a credit or debit card. Do we really want them to know everything that there is to know about us. Recently, with cameras installed on every other telephone pole, the government can see everything that you are doing, under the guise that the individual has no legal expectation of privacy when on the street.
What are you willing to do to regain your freedom? Shred the cards, discontinue the use of cell phone, stop using a GPS to find the way to Aunt Martha’s house? Do you really care?

Joel, I ran out of tin foil this week. Can I borrow some from you?

Gee Eric, I’d like to help you but after I lined all of my hats with it I only had enough left to wrap up the BBQed chicken I made the other night. Have you thought of getting an invisibility cloak. There are three that I have heard of, Harry Potter has one and Astor Moody has two. Good luck!
