Capitalist hedge fund managers face U.S. rendition

(Cliff Asness of AQR recently fought back against President Barack Obama’s efforts to paint hedge funds and other investors as “selfish” for refusing to take haircuts on their loans to Chrysler. Cliff told me this morning that he’s traveling. I think his outspokenness makes him vulnerable as a “capitalist enemy combatant” and I have advised him to protect himself:

Cliff Asness has been an unrepentant capitalist for years. (Source: NYTimes)
As Sy Hirsch has so ably reported, U.S. government agents in small Dutch towns will force you into “stress positions” such as sitting in a café for hours at a time where you will accomplish absolutely nothing while drinking liquefied chocolate (“chocolate boarding”).
In other places, such as Amsterdam, mood altering drugs will create a sensation of wellness and euphoria to which Americans, with an average of 10 days’ vacation, are unfamiliar. As your per capita productivity decreases, you will slowly lose the will to work. It is a fate worse than taxes.

They also have these little stores in Amsterdam where you can find a sympathetic ear to listen to your woes. You’ll know that you’re there by the little red lights that are in front of the windows, and the pretty ladies sitting demurely in chairs beyond those windows.

Well, sort of, in that when I last visited Amsterdam I stayed in a hostel which was right in the middle of the red light district. I was fascinated by the spectacle, but was too busy looking for hash to be bothered with that sort of thing. Also, the place was filled with American girls backpacking all over Europe. There was an Olympics that Summer in Europe. No need to go to professionals then, plus, who had the money for such things. I had enough money for a lot of beer though and the food in Amsterdam was great.
