The Quest for Justice!

The AP reports that Spain’s top investigative magistrate, Judge Baltasar Garzon, opened an investigation of the Bush Administration over the alleged torture of terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay, saying that documents recently declassified by the Obama administration “reveal what had been just an intuition: an authorized and systematic plan of torture and mistreatment of person denied freedom without any charge whatsoever and without the rights enjoyed by any detainee.”

Garzon also acted on the basis of accounts of four prior Guantanamo inmates who have charged in Spanish Courts that the US tortured them.  The four, formerly charged with belonging to al-Qaida, were cleared of the accusations.

Spain, as you know, was one of the homes of Waterboarding during the Spanish Inquisition.  Apparently, having come to grips with their history in connection with torture, the Spanish are taking steps to see that such practices are never allowed in civilized society.  I would be happiest if this judge had an armed guard traveling with him at all times so that his life wasn’t interfered with by the CIA or other covert organization.

As with Anna Karina, we prefer to remember the U.S.A as she was in the 1960s.
