In Abdullah II: The 5-State Solution By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/28/opinion/28friedman.html?hp,

Friedman, speaking for King Abdullah proposes the following solution to the Israeli Palestinian dilemma. (My abstract)

1. Israel pulls completely out of the West Bank, and whatever land they keep must be paid for inch for inch with Israeli land elsewhere.

2. The Palestinians — Hamas and Fatah — agree to form a national unity government. This government then agrees to accept a limited number of Egyptian troops and police to help Palestinians secure Gaza and monitor its borders, as well as Jordanian troops and police to do the same in the West Bank. The Palestinian Authority would agree to five-year “security assistance programs” with Egypt in Gaza and with Jordan in the West Bank.

3. Israel does a 5 year phased withdrawal from the West Bank and Arab Jerusalem, exclusive of agreed land swaps, this being tied to the Palestinian development of a working government. This is monitored by the U.S.

4. Saudi Arabia pays all the costs of the Egyptian and Jordanian trustees, plus a $1 billion a year service fee to each country — as well as all the budgetary needs of the Palestinian Authority. The entire plan would be based on U.N. Resolutions 242 and 338 and blessed by the U.N. Security Council.

So there you have it, according to Tom Friedman. I think that one might work, depending upon who wins the upcoming Israeli elections. If Netanyahu gets in it won’t go.

As to the second proposal, that Hamas and Fatah kiss and make up and form a unity government. LOL. Hamas is a fundamentalist organization and Fatah is moderate Arab. I don’t think that it will work. What needs to happen to Hamas is what happened to the German SA in 1935. They need to be obliterated, and so does Hezbollah for that matter.

Sure Israel can pull out in 5 years for sure, provided they kill the settlers at the same time Hamas and Hezbollah are being liquidated. Simple really.

I love the 4th proposal, yeah, let the Saudi’s pay for it all.

Oh yeah, what happens when the peaceful Hamas and Fatah start killing the Jordanian and Egyptian soldiers (trustees). Do the Jordanians and the Egyptians shoot back? What a great scenario this is for a new Middle East war. Also, will the Iranians just sit back and allow their control of the situation be eviscerated by the Sunni Arabs?

What does anyone else think?

How about this: Israel pulls out of the West Bank and remains out of Gaza while reopening the border. Then for every rocket or suicide bomber attack they take back 2% of the land. How long do you think before Israel has reclaimed all the land they ceded? 6 months?
