Yahoo Censors Nobama Search

Posted by Eric Hazard | 10 Comments

I ran a search this morning for Nobama on Google, Ask and Yahoo. Below are screen shots of the results.

Nobama

The pictures are a little small to read all of the text (you can click on the photo for a full size result). Google and Ask both delivered sites selling Nobama related merchandise at the top of the search. Yahoo did not. Rather, I was offered Obama’s official site first. The search engine took it upon itself to include an Obama search.

Most interesting to me is the wording of the Yahoo result. The search engine does not ask, “Do you mean Obama?” Rather, it includes searches for all the Obama and Nobama sites. Ostensibly, the results feature Obama’s campaign sites at the top of the search. One must opt out of Obama site inclusion before receiving only Nobama related sites.

At the same time, I typed “McSame” into all three. (This was a common derogatory term I read to describe John McCain). The results do not offer any McCain related link. The searcher is offered anti-McCain web sites.

It would appear Yahoo is allowing the company’s institutional political bias to alter the way people receive information. Can we change the way people read about the election? At Yahoo, the answer is “yes we can!”

Seems that Yahoo has in fact removed the nobama site from its index. Unless there is some overwhelming reason for doing this, it definitely falls under the category of “not cool.” Luckily, Yahoo accounts for less and less search traffic by the day.

Just a thought to put a damper on your conspiracy theory party.

If you look at the page code for the NOBAMA site you’ll notice there are no keywords listed in their meta tags, which many search engines use as a way to get people to their page. So perhaps the site designer needs to address that issue (though looking at how g-d awful it looks… maybe they lack the skill).

Who cares if anyone can find it? Have you read the illiterate and ill-reasoned screeds underlying this shmuck’s argument?

“The reason Canadians come down to America to visit a doctor even if they have to pay for it is because we have the best medical care system in the world. You know Princess Diana could have been saved if the accident happened in America. The free French medical system is just not the same quality we have here in America. And, he wants us to bring our medical quality down to the European level.”

    Oh, lord.

    Some more brilliance:

He talks about giving equal pay for equal work so that his daughters would make the same as your sons. We all know that its not possible to do this. Companies would just hire fewer women and it will be tougher for women to get jobs if its legislated. And, if he was so hip on this, he had his chance at putting a woman on the ticket, Hillary Clinton.

I was too blinded by the ugliness of the site to actually read it, so thanks for quoting it. Oh, lord, is right.

When you strip away his lofty rhetoric Obama is an old school socialist. If he is elected your taxes will go up and he will institute national healthcare.

There are serious problems with national healthcare that any Canadian or European can tell you about. To ignore the clear flaws in state controlled healthcare systems is ridiculous. If we are going to make sure that every American has health insurance we should approach it in a much different way.

They would improve their search ranking if this was their home page instead of a subpage http://www.nobama.com/members/

It’s not national healthcare. Read the plan, then come back to us before you start reciting things you learned from Hannity & Limbaugh.

From BarackObama.com (the first search result when I type nobama into yahoo):

“Obama’s Plan to Cover Uninsured Americans: Obama will make available a new national health plan to all Americans,”

From page 2 of the full plan:

“…Making health insurance universal, which will reduce spending on uncompensated care.”

Anyway, the point of this post was not to debate the merits and ridiculous statements of one guy’s Web site. Rather it was to ask why Yahoo directs ALL nobama search inquires to Obama sites first. Here is a listing of the search results for a yahoo nobama inquiry:

    barackobama.com
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama
    my.barackobama.com
    my.barackobama.com/page/content/hqblog
    obama.senate.gov
    http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/candidates/barack.obama.html

A similar listing from the same search on Google:

    http://www.nobama.com
    shop.cafepress.com/nobama
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MADZnsIkpdQ
    http://www.nobamanetwork.com
    nobamablog.wordpress.com/
    democrats-against-obama.org/

Do you see the problem now?

He’s not requiring adults to get on the plan – which hardly makes it universal in the way that a socialist health system implies. His plan requires children be on the plan, yes, but not adults.

And enough with the NOBAMA site already, haven’t we already determined it’s crap?

  10. Eric Hazard

Yes, the nobama.com site is crap.

That is not the issue. Rather, I am asking why yahoo filters ALL nobama inquires to an obama search.

So enough of that, back to health care. I wouldn’t be such a stickler about the specifics if you hadn’t started in with the “read the plan” statement.

So I go to barackobama.com again today. From the first quote at the top of the page, I get this:

“My plan begins by covering every American. If you already have health insurance, the only thing that will change for you under this plan is the amount of money you will spend on premiums. That will be less. If you are one of the 45 million Americans who don’t have health insurance, you will have it after this plan becomes law.”

I think that last sentence bears repeating:

If you are one of the 45 million Americans who don’t have health insurance, you will have it after this plan becomes law.

I’m not so good with the HTML, otherwise I’d back it flash, and give it one of those borders with ants crawling around it.

Then I click on the FAQ page (again from barackobama.com) and there’s this nugget:

“Employers who do not offer meaningful coverage to their employees will have to contribute a percentage of their payroll to help offset the cost of providing coverage to all Americans.”

So employers will be required to contribute money to cover all Americans. Not all children, not all seniors, ALL AMERICANS.

Then it goes on and on and on….

“Ensuring every American has health coverage, which will reduce spending
on the “uncompensated” care of uninsured people who end up in
emergency rooms and whose care is picked up by institutions and then
passed through higher charges to insured individuals.”

To the question of ” Q. Will I still have choice in health plans?” here’s the answer:

“If you do not have insurance you can choose to enroll in the new public plan, which will offer benefits similar to what every federal employee and member of Congress gets. Or you can choose private plan options through the national health exchange.”

Notice one of the choices is not, “you may choose to remain uninsured because you are young, healthy and free of disease and thus don’t see the point in spending extra money on a service you don’t need.”

    More quotes from the FAQ:

“Third, for employers that already offer coverage to their employees, Obama’s plan will make it less costly for them to continue to do so, because every American will be covered.”

How will every American be covered opposite a government mandate?
