Too Bad WestJet is in Canada

Posted by Matt Cipriano | 3 Comments

WestJet announced today that they are upgrading their planes. They will be eliminating their overhead storage area to replace it with sleeper compartments.

While this may be a pain when it comes to checking luggage, you know WestJet is thinking more about the money. A few more compartments per plane means a few more tickets sold for each flight. These new compartments will be sold for only $12 more then a good old regular seat which will definitely attract people to what they are billing as ‘luxury’ accommodations.

Seems like a pretty interesting marketing idea, and you know if it takes off (no pun intended) you can expect to see this offered on every other airline carrier around.

This was the latest in a string of annual April Fool’s press releases put out by WestJet. Two years ago, guests aboard our planes were told that they would have to assume the “winglet” position for takeoff, bending their arms at the wrist, just like the wing, in order to improve fuel efficiency.

Over 700 people called a special phone number only to find out that it was a hoax, but WestJet offered 10% off any flight to say thanks for playing along.

    Brilliant!

I thought the joke release was very well written.

Thanks Josh! It was great fun to work on and the team did a great job pulling the whole thing together – right down to pictures in the press release of the “comfortable” sleeping cabin.
