Wines of FreshDirect: A Pinot Grigio Surprise

Wines of FreshDirect: A Pinot Grigio Surprise

Sometimes a wine just surprises you. Last night, this one surprised us. We were both expecting a “ho-hum ‘nother Pinto Grigio” and instead we got a fairly interesting wine to go with our halibut. More mellon than citrus, this tart up front wine, mellows out nicely as it warms to room temperature.

San Camillus

Winery: San Camillus
Grape: Pinot Grigion
Region: Veneto, Italy
Year: 2006

Source: FreshDirect.com
Price: $10

Color: pale yellow

Nose: Honeysuckle and pear notes came to me first, while a swirl awakens lime, lemon and peach notes.

Taste: Flat in flavor out of the gate, it takes a little while in the mouth for this one to reveal its tart citrus and pear flavors. As it warms, it opens up to more distinctive lemon and kiwi. More medium than light bodied, the wine is more balanced, and not as fruity, as perhaps the nose would have lead us to believe. It finishes with melon and leaves a slightly metallic taste.

What I like: This was surprising well balanced wine complimented our halibut dinner nicely. As it warmed to room temperature, it became more restrained, mellowing out the tart flavors up front and presenting more of an even keeled melon bouquet. At $10 a bottle, this is a great white wine to always have in the refrigerator.

What I don’t like: The metallic finish was weird. It was almost as though someone had dropped a penny in my wine glass. I could have done without that flavor in an otherwise fruity concoction.
