NYTimes health science article on communciation and mimicryThe Times yesterday had two great articles worth checking out. The first has immediate utility for anyone whose work relies on communication.

The second, regarding the reasons why muscles tire and how scientists might be able to combat fatigue, can be filed under Scary Ways we are Defying Nature Potentially to our Detriment:

[Scientists] have found that immediate social bonding between strangers is highly dependent on mimicry, a synchronized and usually unconscious give and take of words and gestures that creates a current of good will between two people.


Finding May Solve Riddle of Fatigue in Muscles

…when muscles grow tired, the investigators report, tiny channels in them start leaking calcium, and that weakens contractions. At the same time, the leaked calcium stimulates an enzyme that eats into muscle fibers, contributing to the muscle exhaustion.
