The assault on Facebook

Tom Hodgkinson of The Guardian makes some very good points in his assault of Facebook:
At the time of writing Facebook claims 59 million active users, including 7 million in the UK, Facebook’s third-biggest customer after the US and Canada. That’s 59 million suckers, all of whom have volunteered their ID card information and consumer preferences to an American business they know nothing about.

I don’t use Facebook enough for them to know much about me. Market research firms would be seriously mislead if they used any data garnered from Facebook to determine my actual purchasing preferences. Further, my browser cache clears each time I close my browser, so there is little chance that they can track me for long after I leave Facebook. As for my id information, I don’t really care about that. My basic info including my phone number is publicly available online.

Tom seems like a bit of a technophob/conspiracy theorist. He makes it sound like Peter Theil’s libertarian philosophy is scary. Frankly, I totally agree that the more technology can do to subvert government control the better. I don’t really like Facebook or use it for much at all, but I find it fascinating that a philosopher is behind Facebook. About time!

I concur with Paul on the technophobic conspiracy theorist theory.

Meanwhile, Hodgkinson used Google to find various bits and facts for his story. We all know Google never mines its users for information that may later be used electronically to form some product.
