Bargain Wines for The Year
Today’s Wall Street Journal “Tastings” column provides bargain wines for 2007. This week, Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher lay out nine good finds for under $10.99. Their premise is a simple one. You do not have to spend a fortune to have a good bottle of wine. I agree and have long advocated that a good bottle of wine is whatever you happen to enjoy.
The column can be found here. (Note, if you don’t pay Wall Street Journal $99/year, then this link will be unavailable to you. But you can pay Hudson News a $1 today and get a copy in print). Fearing that the Murdoch controlled Dow Jones empire might come after me for copyright infringement if I copy and paste the text of the column, I provide everyone with a list of the wines they suggest.
- Sweet Wines: Powers Winery Muscat Canelli (Columbia Valley) 2006 ($10.33) and Maddalena Vineyards Muscat Canelli (Paso Robles) 2004 ($10.50).
- Tempanillo Wines: Torres de Anguix “Barrica” Ribera Del Duero 2003 ($9.99).
- Rosé Wines: Bodegas Muga Rosé (Rioja) 2006 ($10.99), Toad Hollow Cellars “Eye of the Toad” Dry Pinot Noir Rosé (Sonoma County) 2006 ($10.99), Château d’Oupia Rosé (Minervois) 2006 ($10.95).
- White Wines: Geyser Peak Winery Sauvignon Blanc (California) 2006 ($7.99).
- French Wines: Georges Duboeuf Juliénas 2005 ($10.99).
- Aussie Wines: Penfolds Wines “Koonunga Hill” Shiraz (South Eastern Australia) 2004 ($9.99).
Shortly, I’ll load up my shopping cart at Union Square Wines with 12 of these finds which hopefully will be at my apartment by the end of the day. The tasting column is regularly a good read, so I recommend people make time for it every Friday. Next week, they promise “The Delicious wines of 2007.” I can hardly wait.

Has anyone ever walked into a liquor store and seen anything priced at $10.33?
