Fat Assed Americans

Forbes just published an article: America’s Most Obese Cities.

Unfortunately the news in this article isn’t that surprising. Americans tend to be obese, shocking. This obesity is caused, at least in part, by eating poorly and being lazy. Did I mention how shocked I was by this information. High poverty rates also tend to add to obesity which seems counter intuitive (don’t the poor have less to spend on food?) until you consider that fast food restaurants are usually highly concentrated in less affluent neighborhoods.

Though they list 20 cities in the article we’ll only list the top 5 here:
#1 Memphis, TN
#2 Birmingham, AL
#3 San Antonio, TX
#4 Riverside/San Bernadino, CA
#5 Detroit, MI

One of the reasons that the article cites for all the fat asses across the country are laws and city planning the favors driving over walking or biking.

In a related article Forbes also ranked the 20 most Sedentary cities, is anyone surprised to see that Memphis, Detroit and Birmingham were all in the top 5 (San Antonio was #7).

And in a final related article a truck in Virginia leaked chicken fat over 20 miles of highway along Route 13 and caused at least 4 accidents. The fat was coming from the Purdue fat and apparently a valve was left opened, allowing the chicken fat to leak out onto the road…
