One of my favorite section of Reuters is “Oddly Enough.”

Even on days when I want to know absolutely nothing about the state of the world and am shielding myself from most news sources I am willing to read Reuter’s “Oddly Enough” section.

Today we have a story about the popularity of Paan, a pungent mix of betel nut and spices wrapped in tobacco leaves, specifically amongst the prostitutes of the country.

Hindustan Latex has released a condom in India that is Paan-flavored to help curtail the spread of HIV. Apparently Paan is a popular distraction while they are walking the streets. The condoms were developed with the help of Family Health International, a public health organization, in hopes to cut down on STDs. through market research they determined that the working girls prefer the taste of paan to that of strawberries, bananas, or chocolate. A spokesperson for FHI was quoted as saying “The community loved it as most of the sex workers chew paan.” You can watch the video about it here.
