Oh, By The Way

So, with all my grumbling about Global Warming and through my rants about the Green movement I totally forgot to mention that I have taken the first step towards greening up my apartment.
Yes, we did it, we made the switch to Compact Fluorescent light bulbs. As I have said, I may not agree with the way the Green Movement is being handled, but I do agree with the movement itself.
Now a lot of people out there have their own beliefs about the lights, like how harsh fluorescent bulbs are, how much they dry out your eyes and that they are super expensive.

Well, let me tell you, we have been using the bulbs for about 3 days now. My eyes feel fine, the bulbs provide pretty much the same type of light as a regular bulb. There i, however some truth to the last statement. To switch all the bulbs in the apartment (of which there are about 7) the cost was $58. Supposedly, I will save because the lights are going to last 8 years (we’ll see) and then there should be massive savings on my Con Edison bill. I’ll keep you posted on that. Also, my new bulbs have a guarantee, so if they do burn out, and the company is still around however many years from nwo, well, then I get a replacement bulb.

Go for it, but be careful about using them in lamps with dimmer switches. This could cause them to explode. Also, as with all florescent lights, the most energy is used when you initially turn them on. After they are turned on, florescent lights use a tiny amount of power. It takes hours of use to equal the amount of power used to turn the light on. Therefore, don’t go turning your Compact Fluorescent light bulbs on and off like you do with incandescents. Doing this will waste much more power than leaving the light on for a few hours.

Also, Compact Fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, so you need to follow special disposal procedures for these bulbs. Otherwise, you are being much more environmentally unfriendly than just using regular incandescent light bulbs.
