CitySearch Sold Out
I have used Citysearch for a long time. I admit, 3 out of 4 times I am just looking up the address of a restaurant, but every now and then I actually like to use it for reviews, checking out what other folks have to say about where I am going.
Well, today I finally decided to sign up to write a restaurant review about a particularly bad restaurant experience I had. Make the jump to read my complaints about both Citysearch and 5 Points on Great Jones.
I ate at 5 Points on Great Jones back in December. During drinks they places some pickled veggies on the table for our enjoyment. I watched as a roach emerged from the small bowl. I asked the waiter to remove the dish and tried not to make a scene as I was eating out with all of my co-workers and finding a nice restaurant to seat 10 for a holiday dinner can be difficult. The manger came out an apologized, blaming the roach on a potted pine tree 5 feet from our table.
Next up a smaller roach crawled right up the side of the table between a co-worker and myself. I just squashed that one with my water glass.
On top of all that the oysters were not great (those of us that ate them were a bit “uneasy” the next day).
So, I write up my review on CitySearch and title it “Infested.” I am aware that pretty much every NYC eatery has bugs and probably, at least, mice. I am fine with that as long as they don’t come to visit during the meal, and especially don’t come up out of food on the table. When this occurs, I think there is a problem. I think infested is a pretty appropriate term for the problem. Well, I wrote up the review and hit submit and it got bumped back to me saying I used “inappropriate” language by using not only the term “infested” but also using the term “roach.” I tried rewriting, replacing “roach” with “bug,” again a no-go. Eventually I decided to just trick the CitySearch robot and added spaces: “In fested” and “ro ach.” Oh, also, each time it denied me from submitting my pot it also reset the rating I gave to 5 Points to the middle score as opposed to the low score I was giving them.
My faith in CitySearch has been shaken. If an honest review can’t be written, and you are not allowed to use terms like roach then I want to know what else is a no go? Can you not use terms like “awful?” How much is CitySearch actually censoring its users? Plus, how many people do you think write bad reviews and then are discouraged because they used “inappropriate” language and just never post.
So, be aware, next time you use CitySearch some of those reviews might be inflated or might omit some of the serious problems because people just got frustrated and gave up.
