New Content Please
The blogging community is getting down to the business of making money this fall. Advertising is popping up on blogs everywhere, and the big boys and girls of the blogosphere are striking deals with their favorite mega media conglomerates. All this is fine and I hope to see my associates enriched in the coming months, hopefully in time for the holidays. Maybe, this year we won’t have to make our own gifts! But, there is a sad side to this money train. Blog content is becoming boring.
Yesterday, we saw some of our brethren rise up the pyramid scheme of wealth, power, and influence that is the American dream. AOL bought Weblogs Inc. then Verisign bought weblogs.com. Yes, confusing mergers and acquisitions shit that I’d rather not get into. Also, executive of the blog paparazzi Nick Denton partnered his Gizmodo gadget site with Dutch Death Star VNU.
With this new found wealth and fame it also seems that blogs are becoming more like Big Media publications. As I read over some of my favorite blogs yesterday, I noticed that everyone was posting the exact same shit about the exact same shit. Usually, the best bloggers either manage to cover a newish topic, or they cover it with a fresh angle. With yesterday’s news came a mind numbingly large number of posts about the exact same things. “AOL - WEBLOGS INC.!”, “VERISIGN - WEBLOGS.COM!”, “GIZMODO - VNU!” Everyone felt the need to chime in, and they are continuing today. It has really turned me off to even reading the blogs in my blogroll, which used to cover a refreshingly varied selection of topics ranging from stories about their pets to rants about their pet peeves, and, “oh yeah,” business too.
As an answer to the ridiculously exploding number of posts on the same exact topic, I am going to take my site, Market Anomaly, in a different direction. I’m going to post new, fresh, interesting tidbits. And, every week I will post a couple pieces of serious commentary on the state of marketing and public relations. There is really no point in being part of the growing cacophony of noise that’s out there. As Mom always said, “If you can’t say anything new….” Okay, maybe that’s not exactly it, but this should be the credo of the blogging world.
If you share this vision please let me know. I’d love to collaborate with you on American Madness. We are looking for new voices.
